sound design notes

Sound designing for a series is a journey, and for me, Chhotolok has been the longest one yet.

When I start working on a project, I search for an entry point to the world - something I am familiar with or have experienced personally. The first thing that drew me into the world of Chhotolok, was the characters. They felt like everyday people from around this city. The way they talk and behave, the spaces they inhabit, their humour, everything gave a sense of comfort and familiarity.

Initially, I thought it would be easy to design such a familiar and comfortable world - but the reality was far from that. The biggest challenge was to accommodate so many characters into the world in a way that sounded authentic, flowed with the narrative, and was in sync with its inherent humour. This created a constant need for fresh sounds and ideations. I have some wonderful memories of recording sounds and observing spaces for Chhotolok. But, that's for another day.

Chhotolok is not a regular whodunnit, it is also about the complex layers of the characters and the world they inhabit. I have tried to design a soundscape that makes your journey to this world a comfortable and exciting one. I sincerely hope through Chhotolok, you get to re-discover Kolkata, the noisy chaotic city that we love and live in, and maybe acknowledge a sound or two in the sea of noise that bombards our eardrums every day.
